Unboxed: Classroom in a box
Introduction
In the course D-Lab: Design (2.722) at MIT, three other students and I partnered up with the Out of the Box (OOTB) founders who have been working to develop a mobile, modular classroom in a box. Their mission is to provide critical low-cost education furniture (desk, chair, and classroom supplies) to 3-7 year-olds in developing countries. They strive to provide dignity in education for children without access to classroom infrastructure. The Out of the Box Team already created version 1 and version 2 of the box prototypes. However, after pilot testing in Singapore, they realized there were many issues with the current prototype that needed fixing. Throughout the semester my team and I went through multiple design iterations and design reviews to create version 3 of the box. We focused on improving the stability of the table legs, making the assembly/disassembly process easier, increasing portability, and making the design more water resistant. Our final model consists of an easy-to-carry, low-cost box which contains all the materials to easily assemble a table and chair as well as other educational supplies. Children can bring the box with them to and from school to create a comfortable academic environment.

User Testing
After the first design review, we had the chance to test our initial V3 prototype with children. We received more valuable feedback on what changes we had to make before the second design review from these testing sessions.
